Forget IFTAs, Emmett's up for three Soap Awards

He may have been overlooked by the IFTAs but Irish actor Emmett Scanlan has landed three top nominations for the British Soap Awards.

The Hollyoaks star, who lost out to filmmaker John Michael McDonagh for the rising star award in Dublin earlier this month, has been given the nod for the sexiest male, villain of the year and best actor in the UK.

The 32-year-old, who plays sociopath Brendan Brady on the hit Channel 4 programme, told the Herald that he finds it extremely humbling to be up for one award and can't believe he's actually been nominated for three.

"It's amazing, I'm not really sure how to react to it. I woke up to loads of messages about it -- it was a very nice start to the week anyway.

"For me, the only way to process it is to go 'the nominations are a result of everyone who has supported me, been loyal and given me opportunities'.

"If I win it'll be because of everyone else who has helped me along the way," said the Clontarf native, who added that if he manages to scoop the sexiest male accolade, his dad Rory will be claiming responsibility.

The dad-of-one is hoping to bring his nine-year-old daughter Kayla to the bash, after she was unable to attend the IFTAs for being too young.

"I really want to bring her with me, she's taught me so much and I want her to see what has daddy away so much. I owe a lot to her."

And Emmett admitted that he never expected to take home the prize for rising star, thanks to his performance in Terry McMahon's Charlie Casanova, at the Irish ceremony on February 11.

"I didn't expect it or think I'd get it, nobody has really seen Charlie -- it's not out until May. So to just be at the same table as greats like Brendan Gleeson and Michael Fassbender, that was a win for me."

The actor also revealed that he is looking to take on more movie roles. "I've strong connections in Hollywood and an agent there, but my loyalty lies with Hollyoaks and this team which have given me opportunities.

Also expected to be at the British Soap awards, will be Emmett's other half and co-star Claire Cooper. The pair have been dating since December 2010 and share a home in Liverpool.
