Fans shower Today FM star Ann with support in her cancer battle
TODAY FM host Ray Foley says he didn't mean to seem so grim when asking listeners to pray for co-host Ann Gleeson who is battling cancer.
"I said if you're the praying type have a word with the powers that be. It wasn't like I went on and said let's do a decade of the rosary for Ann," he said.
Co-host Ann was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and began chemotherapy last Tuesday.
On his show yesterday, Ray joked that some fans were taking their praise for Ann too far.
"Quite a number of people have said Ann is the funniest person on Today FM, 'Ann is the best person on your show', 'I'm not going to listen to the Ray Foley show until Ann beats cancer'," he said.
Ray jibed: "Do we not get a look in? I come in here every day. I bleed for you. And all the credit going her way . . . Ann, hurry back because obviously we're shedding listeners by the bundle."
Ann is in good spirits according to Ray. "She's fine, she's laughing and joking. I went out to see her yesterday, she was milling into the Minstrels."
The show, co-hosted by Ray and JP, received several emails from fans offering support. Listener Sinead Whelan said: "I'd really like to pass on to Ann that the everyday listeners are really missing her and thinking about her at the moment ... Ann Gleeson is just as funny if not funnier than Ray and JP."
Ray and JP say they are keeping a positive attitude : "On the one hand, it's nice to get the support, 'cause we're really worried about her -- but we don't want to dwell on that because we want to be positive and upbeat and glass half-full."
