IT WAS like manna from heaven for the conspiracy theorists – proof at last the competition was rigged and the new Rose decided before the TV interviews were complete.

Eagle-eyed viewers viewers noticed on Monday night that the O'Sullivan family crest was on the Newbridge Silverware cutlery that's gifted to the Rose of Tralee.

But Haley O'Sullivan was crowned the 55th Rose on Tuesday night which begged the question, how did they know?

A spokesperson for Newbridge Silverware said it was all a big coincidence and the cutlery was a sample set used for display purposes.

"Our craftsmen picked a random name and because the festival is held in Kerry went for a good Kerry name," the spokesperson said.

The new Rose was also amused by the controversy. "O'Sullivan is the most common name in Kerry and I'm the fifth Rose with that surname. People are just looking for something to talk about," said 25-year old Haley.

Meanwhile, the new Rose was enjoying the first day of her reign with boyfriend Davy Devlin (34), who is originally from Ballinakilla, Co Monaghan but has lived in Dallas for the past 11 years where he owns his own landscape gardening company.

The couple met through Gaelic football but friendship soon "morphed" to something more, said Haley.
