Celia (59) is cream of the Celebrity Salon crop as she brushes off younger rivals

Celia Holman Lee has said she is "absolutely delighted" after beating off competition from a rival half nearly her age to win TV3's Celebrity Salon.

And the glamorous granny, a model agency owner from Limerick, has revealed how, due to her advancing years, she thought that she would never get another opportunity like it again so she gave it 100pc.

Surprise

The style queen, who turns 60 in December, managed to trounce fellow finalist Virginia Macari (32) in last night's final episode of the surprise hit programme, to be crowned 'Best in Beauty'.

"I didn't go in thinking I was going to win -- they worked very hard and the likes of Breffny [Morgan] trying to put on false eyelashes with hands like shovels. It's not easy at all and all I would say is that I did it and kept the pace with the rest of them. I gave it everything because I feel when all these shows come up, they do look at age.

"Look at Arlene Phillips getting the boot from Strictly Come Dancing to be replaced with someone younger -- so I wanted to show people that women of a certain age are still relevant.

"And I thought that I might not ever be asked to do another show like this again so I gave it my very best shot."

Competing against celebs including Pippa O'Connor, Leigh Arnold and Brian Dowling, Celia had to learn all the tricky skills of the beauty trade including waxing, fake tanning and make-up application.

And she reckoned that half the battle was winning over the programme's tough talking mentor, Elaine Butler Doolin.

"If we didn't carry out our tasks to the satisfaction of the tutors, we were told by mentor Elaine that we were failures," she continued.

"I think it was hilarious someone of my age taking on something like this -- I knuckled down and I just thought Elaine was only going to say 'You've failed' to me once and it wouldn't happen again."
