Calendar girl Bernie keeps her date in Dublin

BRAVE Bernie Nolan insists she will be curtailing her party-loving ways next month when she visits Dublin.

Bernie (50) has just been given the all clear after a terrifying battle with breast cancer, which saw her undergo a mastectomy as well as gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy, followed by a breast reconstruction.

And the fun-loving Irish singer and performer insists she won't be risking any chance of a relapse by overdoing it when she returns home next month on tour with acclaimed production Calendar Girls.

"I'm really looking forward to it, I can't wait to see everyone and catch up," Bernie told the Herald.

"Of course we'll have a drink after the show but it won't be anything too wild. The old me would have been up until five or six every night partying but I have to be careful. I don't want to take any chances.

"Me doing Calendar Girls is like me saying I'm back for good."

The actress admits that her decision to take on the role so soon after her own battle with cancer, was spurred by the story's longtime association with raising funds for cancer research.

The play centres around a group of English women who pose naked for a calendar to raise money following the death of one of their husbands from the illness.

"What's amazing about this is that it's a true story, it's quite touching particularly since it does centre around the idea of cancer and how it affects people's lives.

"Having been through it myself I could empathise completely," she added.

Calendar Girls is due to open at the Grand Canal Theatre on February 8.
