Bono's bubbly adds some sparkle to Dave's big night

BONO showed his support for long-time friend Dave Fanning last night when he surprised the RTE star with a generous gift at the launch of his new autobiography The Thing Is.

The Diary can reveal how the singer -- who couldn't be there due to U2's 360 tour, which is currently in Rome -- organised for several crates of champagne to be sent to the VIP bash in order to show his appreciation for the 2fm presenter on his big night.

"Bono very generously sent a few crates of champagne over so we had a good time on him," Dave explained.

"He was sorry he couldn't be there himself, but he and the guys were on stage in Italy so it just wasn't possible. To be honest I never really thought the day would come where I would be launching my own book. I have my agent, Noel Kelly, to thank for making it all happen.

"Obviously Gerry [Ryan] was very much missed. He would have been there without a shadow of a doubt. Morah came though, which meant a lot," he added.

Among the other big names who stepped out to support Dave at the bash at Bentley's restaurant on St Stephen's Green was soap star- turned-author Claudia Carroll.

The glamorous blonde hit the headlines last weekend when it emerged she previously enjoyed a brief romance with Achill-born developer Joe McNamara, the property developer accused of damaging the gates of Leinster House with a cement truck when he staged a protest over the banks.

However Claudia had definitely no comment to make about her former fling.
