Bland leading the bland

It was a case of the bland leading the bland when it came to red carpet chic at last night's Oscars.

Even the fashion losers wouldn't stop traffic, while those who played it too safe, and there were many, totally missed the point: this is an event where your dress can be immortalised, even if it is for the wrong reasons -- a la Bjork's swan outfit in 2001.

Natural beauties, such as Penelope Cruz and Natalie Portman, rocked up in what looked like '90s prom dresses while Miley Cyrus opted for a complete cover-up in a gown that ultimately aged her and showed a lack of confidence when playing with the grown-ups.

Livia Giuggioli's 'green carpet' approach, thanks to her obsession with eco-fashion, meant this Italian beauty and wife of Colin Firth missed the fashion boat once again. Her red dress was shapeless, made her look as if she had no waist and had a balcony bust line you could pot plants in.

Thankfully, a handful of Hollywood's leading ladies did manage to give us our annual reminder that old school glamour is alive and well in some corners.

Jennifer Lopez was the best dressed on the night -- the Latino beauty has rediscovered her fashion mojo since separating from husband Marc Anthony.

Michelle Williams may not have scooped a best actress award but she finally got the big guns out fashion-wise. Of late the My Week With Marilyn star has been dressing like a little girl but for her Oscar red carpet look, Williams was stunning in scarlet.

And finally, Angelina Jolie did not disappoint in a voluminous black number with a thigh slit that Liz Hurley would have been proud of.
