Alison to tell of fight with baby blues
TOP model Alison Canavan is set to speak publicly about her battle with postnatal depression when she appears on RTE's Health of the Nation next week.
The episode will see presenter Dr Mark Hamilton sit down with mum-of-one Alison to discuss her experiences.
Viewers of the lifestyle programme will see Alison speak candidly about her recent struggle to cope with the devastating form of clinical depression, following the birth of her son James Joseph last September.
Alison (33), a model with Morgan the Agency, told the Herald how she is keen to draw awareness to the condition, which affects many new mums, and says she wants to help remove the stigma surrounding the subject of depression in general.
"I'm going to be talking about depression and giving my stance on the topic," Alison explained.
"We will be talking about it in general and I'll be offering some advice and tips on how to cope.
"I will go into my own experience with it years ago and more recently with postnatal depression.
"I think it's so important to get the message out there and hopefully it will help other people suffering with it."
The yummy mummy is planning to launch a new charity organisation called Smiles in the coming months, which will offer support to new mums suffering from postnatal depression.
The Castleknock beauty revealed how she is also planning to pen a book on the topic in the future.
The down-to-earth catwalk queen is currently holidaying in Marbella with her nine-month old son and other family members.
She will jet home to Dublin next week just in time to catch her appearance on the RTE programme.
Those tuning in will also see Dr Hamilton dole out advice to those who visit the show's mobile clinic.
The episode will air on June 22 at 8pm on RTE One.
