Commuters brace for icy journey to work

Commuters were bracing themselves for travel chaos today as temperatures plummeted to minus 10C overnight.

Road conditions are hazardous nationwide as further snow showers fell across the north, south and east of the country.

AA Roadwatch warned roads are treacherous as air temperatures, which barely got above freezing during the day, dropped further.

Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann said driving conditions were extremely difficult and warned of disruption to services. Irish Rail does not expect any problems with service.

Met Eireann issued a severe weather warning and said the bitterly cold snap will continue for the coming days at least, with sharp or severe frosts, icy roads and freezing fog at times.
