Terror attack on nuke base

Friday October 23 2009

A suicide bomber struck a checkpoint near a military complex said to be linked to Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme today, killing seven people.

The attack took place near an aeronautical complex in Kamra, around 30 miles from the capital, Islamabad, and is sure to raise renewed concerns about the safety of Pakistan's nuclear programme.

It came as the Pakistan army pressed ahead with a major anti-Taliban offensive.

The attacker was apparently riding a bicycle and detonated his explosives at a checkpoint.

Pakistan denies Kamra is a base for planes which carry nuclear warheads.

Killer dictator will die in jail

Gregorio Alvarez, the last dictator of Uruguay, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for 37 murders during the South American nation's 1973-1985 military regime.

He was blamed for Operation Condor when dissidents disappeared in a crackdown on leftists.

Alvarez (83) was commander-in-chief of the army in the late 1970s and de facto president from 1980 until shortly before democracy was restored.

He was accused in the disappearance of Uruguayan political prisoners seized in neighbouring Argentina and secretly returned home as part of a joint operation that saw South America's right-wing regimes cooperate to crush leftist dissent.

Alvarez was not in court for health reasons.
