Whelan bid rejected
Stoke City have told Aston Villa to return with a bid of £800,000 for Glenn Whelan after the Championship club saw an initial £500,000 offer for the Rep of Ireland midfielder rejected.
Whelan has managed to keep his place in the Stoke side recent seasons, despite the signings of fellow midfielders Amdy Faye, Seyi Olofinjana, Giannelli Imbula and Joe Allen, the 33-year-old Dubliner starting in 26 games for the Potters last season.
However, Whelan has been told that he is surplus to requirements after last week's acquisition of Darren Fletcher from West Brom. Steve Bruce is determined to sign the 33-year-old Dubliner Whelan to bolster his midfield for next season's promotion bid.
Financial Fair Play rules mean that Villa's purse strings have been tightened, forcing Bruce to look for experienced players at bargain prices.
And Whelan fits the bill perfectly for Bruce, who has also been linked with a move for former Chelsea captain John Terry.
Whelan said last week that Stoke "are probably £50m or £60m deep on what they've spent trying to replace me! I'm still here, standing tall."
