Wenger wants players to aim for title glory
Monday November 09 2009
Arsene Wenger is determined to instil the belief in his Arsenal players which could turn them from contenders to Premier League champions.
The 4-1 mauling of Wolves placed the Gunners firmly in the leading pack heading into the international break, and kept them top of the scoring charts.
Own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock, plus strikes from Cesc Fabregas and Andrey Arshavin, did the damage at Molineux on Saturday.
Having not won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 2005, Wenger is keen to get his hands on the league title again, saying: "The desire is there. We just want to strengthen our belief.
"The most important factor is we play for each other as we do. We have to focus on our performance and continue to develop our style of play.
"We were out of it (the title race) last year after we lost five games in 14. Two years ago, though, we were close to winning it, people forget that. We will keep our humility and play our game."
The most notable aspect of Arsenal's season has been their remarkable scoring rate, with their Premier League record showing they average more than three goals a game.
"We have scored 36 goals in the league," said Wenger, whose side are unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions.
"That is not a coincidence. We can score goals. I feel as though we have a good balance between attack and defence."
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy refused to be downhearted after the home defeat, saying: "I know the crowd appreciate the hard work the team put in and the way they tried to play."
Arsenal's next Premier League opponents will be Sunderland, who lost 2-0 to Tottenham hotspur.
Victory for Spurs at White Hart Lane, secured by Robbie Keane and Tom Huddlestone strikes, came after back-to-back league defeats by Stoke and Arsenal.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp accepted his side had not played particularly well, and were rescued by Heurelho Gomes, who saved Darren Bent's penalty after fouling Sunderland's ex-Tottenham striker.
Like Spurs, Manchester City have designs on finishing in the top four, but a 3-3 home draw against Burnley was not part of their plan.
City clawed their way back from two goals down to lead 3-2 heading into the final stages, but substitute Kevin McDonald grabbed a leveller for the Clarets.
After a fifth successive draw, City manager Mark Hughes said: "We have to learn to see games out."
Burnley's neighbours Blackburn rovers came from behind to beat Portsmouth 3-1 thanks to Jason Roberts' double and Ryan Nelsen's header.
Aston Villa destroyed Bolton wanderers 5-1 -- as John Carew set up three goals and scored one himself in a display which delighted manager Martin O'Neill.
