VEC set for 40th celebrations

VEC FC are celebrating their 40th Anniversary this Saturday in the Morrison Hotel on Ormond Quay with a great night in store for all players and members, both past and present.

VEC joined the UCFL in 1974 and in those 40 long years - not once have the club been relegated from the top-flight.

The club currently have two teams in the league, with their 2nd team in Division 2A. However, for the previous 21 years the club actually had 3 teams in the UCFL.

In the 40 years that the club have been playing football, almost 400 players have represented the club and many of them will be in attendance on Saturday night.

VEC have also seen plenty of success in their 40 years, winning several cups, their first in 1979 - the Barton Shield.

They also enjoyed a great period winning the then major Elvery Cup, lefting the cup in 1980, 81, 84 and 88.

Tickets for the anniversary BBQ are €27.50 each for members (past and present) and partners, with a deal €50 for 2 tickets for a member and partner. You can get more information on www.vecfc.ie or by e-mailing sec@vecfc.ie.

Arthur Griffith send the 'Mun packing in shootout

Arthur Griffith Park's 2nds were featured in The Herald's 'Striker 2' last Tuesday after creating a shock in the UCFL Challenge Cup, but across the city in Ballymun that same day the first team were creating another big shock.

With no one really giving them a chance against one of Junior footballs biggest names, Arthur battled all afternoon to eventually win a penalty shoot-out 4-3 against Ballymun United after a scoreless draw at the end of extra-time.

And the UCFL club could have won it normal time also had they not missed a spot-kick after 85 minutes.

In the drama of the shoot-out, Arthur held their nerve superbly with Paddy Maher, Val Dragan, Danny Kilduff and James Genocchi all scoring.

EID's late comeback breaks Sacred Heart

Two goals in three second half minutes saw UCFL Premier Division team, EID FC, progress into the 3rd round of the FAI Junior Cup by claiming a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart's Under-21's.

After falling behind just before the half time break, EID levelled matters through a wonderful individual goal from Raphael Alves. Then just two minutes later Alves whipped in a great cross for Maicon Soares to score the winner.
