Van Gaal plans raid on Dortmund for Gundogan and Hummels
LOUIS Van Gaal has kicked off his summer spending spree early with a decisive move for PSV striker Memphis Depay which left Liverpool and PSG floundering.
Next up for van Gaal is likely to be the Borussia Dortmund pair, Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels who are reported to be on the brink of signing deals.
And if the Dutchman can complete two more marquee acquisitions while most of his rivals are still focused on the Top Four battle, it will represent a huge coup.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has long been an admirer of Depay but it is thought that van Gaal's close contact with him during Holland's Brazil 2014 adventure was crucial in swinging the decision towards Old Trafford. According to reports in Holland, Manchester United were not even in the picture 48 hours ago and it seemed as if Liverpool and the French mega-club PSG would fight it out for his signature.
However, a late, late phone call from van Gaal appears to have done the trick and convinced Depay that his future was in Manchester United red. Depay's form for PSV made him an obvious target for several of the biggest clubs in Europe. He has scored 21 goals playing wide on the left.
"I always say; dream, believe, achieve. I was dreaming and believing of becoming the champions of the Eredivisie with PSV and we achieved it," said Depay after the announcement.
"Time to set my goals again on winning trophies with Manchester United."
