Van Gaal on alert as Gundogan confirms exit from Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund has confirmed Ilkay Gundogan (right) will not renew his contract, paving the way for a summer transfer.
Gundogan, 24, is out of contract next year and yesterday reports in Germany claimed Manchester United had agreed to sign the midfielder.
While those reports proved to be inaccurate, the German held talks over a possible United transfer while David Moyes was in charge last year and is reportedly regarded as a possible heir to Michael Carrick.
The likelihood is Dortmund will allow Gundogan to leave the club this summer in an attempt to avoid a repeat of Robert Lewandowski's departure.
Lewandowski saw out the final year on his deal ahead of a free transfer to Bayern Munich in 2014 and Gundogan could become the latest influential player to depart Dortmund.
Nuri Sahin, Shingi Kagawa, Mario Gotze and Lewandowski have all left the club since their breakthrough Bundesliga title win in 2011. Sahin and former United playmaker Kagawa have since returned to the club, however Gotze controversially joined Bayern a year before Lewandowski.
