LOUIS Van Gaal will go where no Manchester United manager has gone since 1938 in an audacious bid to take Raheem Sterling to Old Trafford.

Having already secured the services of Dutch star Memphis Depay for next season, Van Gaal has moved his focus to Sterling and reports claim that an offer has already been rejected by Anfield.

Sterling has been valued between £40m and £50m and it seems that the issue now is how much and where, rather than if he will go.

Either Van Gaal is serious about prising Liverpool's best asset away or he wants to light the fuse on this transfer saga, adding further fuel to an already volatile mood amongst Liverpool fans.

Manchester City are also watching Sterling closely and are reported to be ready to offer a £200,000 a week, he's currently on £35,000 a week.

Sterling has admitted that he has always been a United fan but no player has moved directly between the clubs since 1964 and the last man to leave Anfield for Old Trafford directly was Allenby Chilton in 1938, having never played for the first team.
