Steven Gerrard slammed Raheem Sterling and his reluctance to go on Liverpool's pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

Sterling has not attended training at Liverpool for the past two days, claiming that he has been ill.

The Liverpool squad are due to fly out to Thailand on Sunday ahead of their first friendly against a Thai All Stars side in Bangkok next week.

Sterling has been the subject to two failed bids from Manchester City, the last an offer of £40million, and they continue to monitor the situation.

Liverpool remain adamant the England international will not be allowed to leave for anything below their £50million valuation - a price City appear unwilling to meet.

However, Gerrard, who is about to make his LA Galaxy debut this weekend, said  “I’m not happy with all that carry-on and I don’t think there’s any need for it. They all need to be men about the situation.

“Raheem needs to go in and speak to the owners and to Brendan himself, tell them what he wants and go about it that way. You don’t have to throw illnesses in and refuse to go on tour.

“There are millions and millions of Liverpool fans around the world who are itching to see Raheem Sterling in a Liverpool kit. So I don’t think it’s fair on them if he is behaving like that.”

In another interview, Gerrard appeared to have a pop at Sterling, by claiming he was a "different end of the scale" to new club captain Jordan Henderson.

"Raheem and Jordan are at different ends of the scale," said Gerrard. "Jordan's so professional, he's a winner, a great lad.

"I don't think there's a more fitting player to take that armband off me. I see a lot of my game in Jordan's game and what I like about him is he's very humble."
