Temp Head - AVONDALE UNITED 2

AVONDALE UNITED 2

SHERIFF YC 3

In the space of three months, Sheriff YC have picked up their seventh trophy of 2013 by beating Avondale United 3-2 in an exciting final at Turners Cross in Cork yesterday.

Sheriff started the game without five of their regular players and were forced to play Man of the Match John Lester in a sweeper's role. and this experience was always to the fore with a polished performance over the 90 minutes.

Sheriff got off to the perfect start when Kevin Lynch fired home from a tight angle to put them one up in the seventh minute.

With Darren Dunne pulling the strings in the middle, Sheriff had the majority of play, but were caught in the 14th minute when some sloppy defensive play led to a penalty which Avondale's Roy Long converted.

Eight minutes later, Sheriff restored their lead with a tremendous strike from Darren Dunne which, despite the heroic attempts of Daniel O'Leary, flew into the top corner of the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Avondale when in the 43rd minute referee Tom Tully was left with little choice but to dismiss Avondale's Roy Long for stamping on Sheriff's 'keeper Austin O'Neill.

Sheriff were content to allow Avondale make all the play in the second half and with Karl Caulfield dictating play, it was a dangerous tactic to use as Avondale equalised in the 80th minute when Danny Long fired home from close range.

Avondale had the belief that they could go on and win the game, but were caught on the break in the 46th minute when Alan McCabe rounded the 'keeper to fire home the winning goal for Sheriff YC to capture the Tom Hand Memorial Cup in front of Tom's sons Patrick and Lorcan in what was an excellent curtain-raiser to the Amateur Season.
