Lewis McGugan piled further misery on Steve McClaren (right) as Sky Bet Championship Sheffield Wednesday dumped Premier League Newcastle out of the League Cup.

McClaren's men did not manage a single shot of note on target over 90 soul-sapping minutes and have now won just one of the eight games they have contested so far this season with League Two Northampton their only victims in the last round of the same competition.

Perez hit the side-netting after turning smartly on Sissoko's pass four minutes later, but it was the visitors who took the lead with 14 minutes remaining when the home side failed to deal with a ball into the box and when it broke to McGugan, he drilled it past Tim Krul.

Meanwhile, Jay Rodriguez, Sadio Mane and Shane Long scored two goals apiece as Southampton coasted into the fourth round of the League Cup with a 6-0 victory at MK Dons. The 26-year-old's brace, his second from the penalty spot, came either side of Mane's double while Long grabbed his two later in the second half - making it the heaviest defeat in MK Dons' short history.

The rout began with a mis-placed pass and Rodriguez punished the Championship side in the fifth minute.

Long got the goal his performance deserved - but it had a large stroke of luck about it. McFadzean cleared Juanmi's cross against the Republic of Ireland striker and the ball bounced into the net.

There was nothing fortunate about his second goal in the 75th minute when he latched on to Steven Davis' through-ball and finished from the edge of the area.
