Stam: Memphis will be a hit
MANCHESTER United legends Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar have welcomed Louis van Gaal's latest signing Memphis Depay to Old Trafford and predicted a big future for their compatriot.
Both Dutchmen believe that Depay will slot straight into van Gaal's plans.
"United always want to attack and the club always has an interest in players that have a lot of pace and who can also play the one-v-ones and create something or score goals. Memphis is that type of player," said Stam (above).
"He doesn't pay a lot of attention to what people say in the press, he does his own thing and is very focused on his own thing. Of course, he is a team player and that's what you need to be at United, but he has his own qualities and he knows that."
Stam's former team-mate for club and country, Van der Saar, believes that Depay can settle in quickly; "The dressing room is always key in helping young players who come to United," said van der Sar.
"You can't do it on your own. So it's always nice when you have a Michael Carrick or even a Ryan Giggs - who of course was a left winger like Memphis - to help you out.
"The other older players like Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, and others like Phil Jones who have been at the club for a few years, will help him to find his feet in Manchester.
"Depay is not afraid. I think he's also a little bit eager - you don't win the title only with choir boys! In that case I think Manchester United has a future star on their hands," he said
