Southhampton counting Long cost
Shane Long, fresh from ending his 18-match goal famine with club and country, may be forced to skip this weekend's Premier League action with his club due to an injury picked up on international duty.
Long scored his first goal of the season in Ireland's win in Moldova on Sunday but he was unable to see out the game due to a hamstring problem, which has left him as a doubt for Southampton's game at home to Burnley tomorrow, though boss Claude Puel hopes he's able to take part in Thursday's glamour Europa League tie at home to Inter Milan.
"We will see with Long. There is a possibility he will play, but he has been in a bit of pain, but we will see," said Puel, also likely to be without Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.
"There is some pain in the hamstring for Bertrand and for Long, and Cedric a problem in foot ligament. For Cedric, it's two or three weeks out.
"I hope these players will come back quickly because it's important for the group and with all these games in such a short time, it's important to have the whole squad available."
Aiden McGeady, who was unfit to join the Irish squad for their World Cup qualifiers, is still suffering from that hamstring injury and misses out for Preston away to Brighton today.
"Aiden pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad with a hamstring injury and stayed with us. It is not a really serious one, he will be out for the weekend but hopefully we will have him back very soon," says Preston manager Simon Grayson, who does hope to have Ireland U21 cap Alan Browne fit.
