Rooney in final slot
Mourinho reveals captain will have role at Wembley
Jose Mourinho will give Wayne Rooney a chance to help nail down the first silverware of the season in the League Cup final against Southampton at Wembley tomorrow.
After a wild week of rumour and speculation about Rooney's future and huge salary offers from the Chinese Super League, Mourinho is more than happy that his skipper's statement put an end to the story so that everyone at Old Trafford can focus on Wembley and the rest of the season.
"He did it in exactly the right moment because I think this should be the last question about him until the end of the season," said Mourinho.
Michael Carrick is fit to play as is Anders Herrera but Henrikh Mkhitaryan is out and Rooney is likely to start on the bench.
"He's fine, he's training with the team," claimed the United manager.
"He was not selected for Saint Etienne because he was not ready to play but he was ready to have one more important training session and no doubts, he is involved in the game."
Mourinho complained bitterly about the Europa League Round of 16 draw which paired Manchester United with Russian team Rostov.
"It's a bad draw in every aspect," he said. "It's far and is difficult. It's far and comes in a bad period for us.
"They are a very difficult team, they had a very good Champions League campaign. They're defensive and physical but we'll go for it."
