BRENDAN Rodgers (right) feels that his Liverpool side are back in the hunt in the Premier League on the back of their 2-1 win over Manchester City.

With Chelsea distracted from the title race by their League Cup battle with Spurs, it was a chance for the title contenders to make up some ground, and while Arsenal recovered from their midweek Champions League disaster to get the better of Everton, City slipped up with that loss to the Reds.

It was a difficult fixture for the Reds, who had do deal with travel fatigue following their exertions in Turkey on Thursday night.

But for Rodgers, beating City was a big statement about their ambitions of sealing a Champions League place.

"It's a big win and there's a long way to go yet," said Rodgers.

"But it is a significant win, it's another three points and keeps us in the chase.

"It was a great result and a brilliant performance, we thoroughly deserved the victory as the players were relentless and we had some real quality in our football."

City's loss now make it hard for them to retain their league title.

"Of course it is difficult to reach the top of table if you lose three points," said boss Manuel Pellegrini.
