Red luck for Louis

LUCkY Louis van Gaal may well look back at a red card for Wayne Rooney as the moment his job at Old Trafford clarified itself.

Some have suggested that Van Gaal should sideline Rooney to accommodate the range of other talents he now has available in the attacking area.

Last week, Van Gaal went to some lengths to speak about how Rooney could play in midfield if necessary but I'm sure if the Dutchman had a choice, he would prefer to buy a couple of specialist midfield men who have been playing in the position all their lives.

So the question arises whether Rooney is now, to some degree, in the way. However, Van Gaal already hitched his wagon to the player when he gave him the captain's armband.

Now, Rooney is facing suspension and could be out for three games, a free chance for Van Gaal to test his other stars without any drama.

It's odd how often something like this, some quirk of fate which forces a manager to try something else, can end up being a huge, huge moment.
