Peter Schmeichel: Man United will survive if De Gea leaves

Manchester United can still challenge for trophies without David de Gea, according to former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

Schmeichel enjoyed a hugely successful career at Old Trafford, culminating in the treble win of 1999. But while he proved hard to replace, the Dane believes it would not be a devastating blow to lose De Gea this summer.

“If he wants to go he’s done fantastically well for Manchester United,” he said. “We should be thanking him and we of course will move on.

“I think the most important thing for Manchester United is that we have a positive transfer window and we get players in that can take the club forward. It will never be about one player, it’s not just about David de Gea.”
