Where can poor José go? Chelsea's decision to cut their losses and show Mourinho the door has created a blizzard of speculation and standing at the centre of it all is Pep Guardiola.

Reports in Spain and Germany last night claimed that Guardiola has all but agreed a deal to take over from Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad this summer.

But with opposition to Louis van Gaal growing by the day among Manchester United fans, all bets are off.

To add to the intrigue, bookmakers have slashed the odds on Mourinho taking over from Van Gaal but former Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon won't be taking that bet after tweeting that he believes 'The Special One' is on his way back to the Bernabeu .

"Mou is closer to Madrid," he posted via his official Twitter account, before later adding: "Only a few things to sort out and he'll be here."

A push from Old Trafford for Guardiola would kill Mourinho's fondest hope that he could find a way to step into Alex Ferguson's shoes, albeit in a delayed fashion.

Other rumours suggested that Guardiola has already spoken with Chelsea and identified the need for ten new players, presumably very expensive performers who would add considerably to the bill Roman Abramovioch will have to pay by the time all of this is over.

Mourinho's compensation package is in the region of €60m and Abramovich has already shelled out over €100m to departing managers and staff.
