MARTIN O'NEILL feels that Ireland can make an impact at Euro 2016, just as smaller nations like Costa Rica impressed at the World Cup finals - if the Republic can secure qualification, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

"We want to try and qualify. France would be phenomenal and we have as good a chance as any of the other sides in our group outside of Germany," O'Neill told Today FM.

"Our hardest thing will be qualifying. It will be difficult but if we get there who knows, you might go through the group stages and end up in the semi-final, nothing is impossible when you are there - getting there is difficult.

"The likes of Costa Rica, Australia, Algeria were not out of place in Brazil and once you are there, you can throw off the shackles with no expectations," added O'Neill.
