POLICE in England are investigating death threats directed at former Derry City man Darren Kelly, the new manager at Oldham.

Kelly, who played underage football for the Republic but then opted to play for Northern Ireland, was a surprise appointment as Oldham boss last week. But a tweet from Kelly where he described Sinn Féin MLA Martin McGuinness as a "legend" has angered some of the Oldham support and it's believed that Kelly, 35, has been threatened.

"Oldham Athletic AFC are aware of threats made against individuals connected with the club. These matters have been passed to the police," the club said.

Kelly said: "It's been blown out of proportion. I've deleted Twitter, my account went into meltdown."
