Manchester City have been revealed as the oldest team in the Barclays Premier League this season.

Research shows City fielded the average oldest starting XI in the division this year.

The average age of City's starting line-up this season was 28 years and 357 days.

City were the only club who never fielded a team with an average age of under 28.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini has kept his faith in his experienced campaigners like Yaya Toure (who turns 32 on Wednesday), Martin Demichelis (34) and Pablo Zabaleta (30) while Frank Lampard (36) has also made eight league starts for the club since his move from Chelsea.

Most of those stars helped City to the title last season, but they missed out on top spot this year, suggesting an injection of youth is necessary.

Title-winners Chelsea were 11th in the average age table, which suggests they got the balance between youth and experience spot on.

Relegated side QPR had the second oldest team in the division, with the average age of their starting XI standing at 28 years and 236 days.

Rangers fielded three of the five oldest starting line-ups in the league. They started with their oldest XI in the home defeat to Manchester United in January when the average age of their first team was 30 years and 186 days.

West Brom (28 years, 157 days) were third oldest team in the league and Leicester (28 years, 153 days) were fourth.

Mauricio Pochettino's trust in youth was underlined by the fact that Tottenham have had the youngest average starting XI in the league this season.

The average age of their line-up was 24 years and 287 days. Like Tottenham, Liverpool came up short in their bid for Champions League qualification.

The Reds had the second youngest team in the league this year. The average age of their starting XI was 25 years and 202 days.

Manchester United had the fifth youngest team in the division. The average age of their line-up was 26 years and 148 days.
