Mark McGhee: Scottish strikers just as good as Poland's Robert Lewandowski
Scotland coach Mark McGhee has, astonishingly, claimed that the strikers in Gordon Strachan's squad are a match for Poland's in-form forward Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish captain has the best record in Europe right now, having scored 12 goals in his last four games for Bayern Munich and he plans to take that form into Thursday's Euro qualifier in Glasgow, Poland knowing a win would secure qualification for France 2016.
McGhee, assistant to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, is aware of Lewandowski's form but he feels that the sight of Leigh Griffiths scoring against Hamilton is on a par with Lewandowski's two-goal blast for Bayern in front of 75,000 fans in the Bundesliga last weekend.
"We have total respect for him, a fantastic player," said McGhee of the Bayern man.
"But we have players in form as well, players who scored at the weekend. Lewandowski's in form and scoring goals and has proven to be a fantastic acquisition for Bayern Munich, but in general I don't think they're that different from a year ago than we are," he added, referring to last year's 2-2 draw between Scotland and the Poles.
"I don't know that as a team they have improved. I don't think they have left us behind in any way."
