Manchester United have agreed a fee with Southampton for midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin as Louis Van Gaal’s summer revamp gathers pace.

Schneiderlin underwent a medical at United’s Carrington training base on Sunday, where he joined the other major midfield recruit Bastian Schweinsteiger.

United had an earlier bid of £20million rejected by the Saints for the 25-year-old, who the south-coast club rated at £25million, but a fresh offer believed to be £24million sealed the deal and the Frenchman is now expected to join the club’s tour of the United States on Monday.

He becomes the fourth major purchase of the summer, as Schweinsteiger also headed for Old Trafford medical this weekend after delivering an emotional, public farewell to Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old will complete the formalities of his £15 million transfer over the next 24 hours after ending his 17 year association with the German club, where he emerged through the youth ranks.

Schneiderlin returned to training with Southampton this month but there was an understanding he would be allowed to join a Champions League club should a suitable offer come in.

Although United's earlier offer of £20million was double the £10 million that was offered last year by Tottenham, Southampton were sure their valuation is very realistic for a player of Schneiderlin’s quality.

Their own statistics show that he was the club’s outstanding player last season, as well as the correlation between his contribution and their results.

They are also well aware that United paid more for arguably less influential central midfielders over recent seasons in Anders Herrera and Marouane Fellaini. A contract offer is also on the table to make Schneiderlin the highest paid player in Southampton's history.
