Magpies 'reach agreement' on French striker Gomis

Newcastle look poised to end their frustrating summer in the transfer market after reaching an agreement for the transfer of Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

It has been reported that the two clubs have ended their stalemate over the player, with a deal appearing dead in the water earlier this week when the French club rejected Newcastle's near-£7million take-it-or-leave-it bid.

However, it seems the Magpies have had a change of heart in terms of what they are willing to pay.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed yesterday that his club had agreed a fee that could rise to €10million for a player who has represented France on 10 occasions.

He said: "We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is €8million, plus a €2million bonus.

AGREEMENT

"The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents' fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.

"There are several people involved in the operation, which complicates the negotiations. But I am hopeful that things will be resolved within 24 or 48 hours."

Progress in the transfer market has been slow to date at St James's Park, with director of football Joe Kinnear unable to deliver on his bullish promise of an early breakthrough following his appointment.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew's top priority at the start of the summer was to sign a new striker, and despite reported interest in Darren Bent and Loic Remy – as well as Gomis – their efforts had come to nothing.

When their offer for Gomis was rejected earlier this week, it appeared they would end their interest in the 27-year-old, as they have consistently refused to budge on their valuation of a player since adopting their now tried-and-tested approach to transfers.

DISCUSS

Yesterday's news means that Gomis, who scored 21 goals for Lyon in all competitions last season, is now free to discuss terms with Newcastle and become the latest French player to join the north-east club.
