Mackay was the best buy of all time
I was saddened to hear that Dave Mackay has passed away. He was a great man and a great player and football has lost a character.
Mackay was the pivot for Spurs' Double win in 1961 but it always puzzled me that he didn't move South sooner after a tremendous spell with Hearts. He signed for Spurs, aged 25, for about £30,000.
I met him at Billy Bremner's funeral and asked him. The culprit was a bone in his foot which he broke a couple of times. Big clubs were afraid to take a risk.
Bill Nicholson did eventually and if you make a list of the bargain buys of all time, Dave Mackay's move to Spurs has to be a contender for the top spot.
