Newtown have 'ace' in Collins
Newtown United A.................. 1 Wicklow Rovers A.................. 0
History was made at the Carlisle Grounds yesterday afternoon in Bray as Newtown lifted the Wicklow Cup for the very first time.
With the Andy McEvoy Premier Division and the Charlie Bishop Cup already in the bag, the Magpies rounded off their 40th anniversary in treble wining style after they previously failed attempts in the Wicklow League's showpiece event.
With the contest in the last minute of the first period, Greg Dunne's clearance was intercepted by Jason Fitzsimons.
He laid the ball off to United's top-scorer Jason Collins.
From fully 25-yards, the winger unleashed a shot that swerved and then dipped beyond the despairing dive of Lee Fitzpatrick for his 18th goal in all competitions during the 2009/10 campaign.
The Magpies had bossed the first half. But were thwarted on three occasions by Fitzpatrick who used his legs to keep out efforts from Collins, man of the match Dessie Waters and Ross Odlum.
When the Rovers custodian was beaten in the 32nd minute, Odlum's lob bounced in front of the open goal and up over the cross-bar.
And before the vital score, Barry Davis' centre was volleyed back by Paudie Doyle only for Stephen Tennant to head off the line and Waters to hit the rebound wide.
Wicklow's chances were limited in the opening half. Brendan Manning's close range attempt was deflected over while David O'Sullivan's 20-yard drive was diverted wide of the target by a deflection.
Under sweltering conditions, both teams suffered in the second period. But Pat O'Toole Division 1 side Rovers had the majority of possession. And went agonisingly close to a 64th minute equaliser.
In above involving Greg Dunne (twice), Andy Jameson and David Rowan, Manning hooked the ball over from the left end-line.
And Irish Colleges cap O'Sullivan met it with a sweet 16-yard volley that just whistled past the post.
