clones cap historic year with cup win!
Clones Town.......................... 2
Clones Town crowned off their one hundred and twenty five year celebrations with another major honour, when they took home the Tully Bookmakers Challenge Cup
Their opponents on this occasion, Knightsbrook currently participate in three divisions below them, but for the greater part of the final on Saturday evening there was very little to chose between the two teams.
Clones started the brighter and the probing runs of their front trio of Brain Mc-Donald, Gary Mc-Kenna and Simon Douglas were causing some anxious moments for the Knightsbrook rearguard, but on the occasions that the keeper Eugene Goulding was called upon he dealt with matters in a confident fashion.
Close to the break Clones should have went one up when a McDonald effort went narrowly wide, and on the stroke of half time Knightsbrook had their best chance when Eddie Murray found himself clear, but Clones keeper Gary Deery was quick off his line to alert the danger.
Five minutes after ' man of the match' Gary McKenna forced a full length finger tip save from 'keeper Goulding,
The vital breakthrough came with just twelve minutes remaining when a cross into the box from Darren Freeman, Simon Douglas sent a pin pointed glancing header to the net.
With just four minutes remaining substitute Steven Smyth put the issue beyond doubt with his side's second goal after Knightbrook appeared to throw caution to the wind in search of an equalizer.
After the match sponsor David Tully presented the Cup, and the man of the match award to Clones Captain Gary McKenna.
