Jon Walters laughs it off as move falls through: 'It's not happening LVG'

JONATHAN Walters has laughed his way through a damp squib deadline day by tweeting: "Helicopter away for the year. It's not happening LVG."

The story of the final day of the transfer window was the failure of the big deals for David de Gea and Saido Berahino but Walters had his own disappointment to cope with.

A late bid from Leicester and interest from Norwich meant that Walters spent yesterday at the Brittania Stadium instead of training with Martin O'Neill's Ireland squad.

O'Neill gave Walters permission to stay in England but like several high profile deals and a loan move for Aiden McGeady, nothing materialised.

Walters's transfer request was turned down by Stoke apparently because they could not get a replacement in time.

Speculation began about a move to Sunderland for McGeady last January and with Everton tying up loan man Aaron Lennon on a permanent deal, his future at Goodison is now uncertain.

Meanwhile, the war of words between Old Trafford and the Bernabeu escalated after Manchester United issued a statement insisting Real Madrid were to blame for the collapse of de Gea's proposed transfer.
