Stephen Ward believes his fellow northsider - and new team-mate at club level - Jeff Hendrick will shine for club and country in the season ahead.

Burnley broke their transfer record to spend £10.5million on Hendrick on Wednesday, his first taste of Premier League football to come, and fellow Clarets man Ward reckons that the new arrival can deliver on the potential he showed with Derby and with Ireland.

"He's a big strong lad, he is good on the ball but has a goal in him as well, that gives you a dimension that other midfielders lack, I am delighted he is with us," Ward told The Herald.

"I had seen for a long time, in the Ireland squad, just how good he was, the rest of Europe got to see Jeff play at the Euros in the summer.

"He has done well for his club and for Ireland but he can do even better, he can easily play in the Premier league and hopefully he can help Ireland drive on to the World Cup.

"The manager at Burnley does his own homework, he just had little chats with me about Jeff, what he was like as a person. It was important that we got the deal over the line, he's a great signing for us.

"He's still a young player who can be a real presence for us in midfield."
