JACK the lad can become a man in Holland, as Roy Keane has given an enthusiastic welcome to the decision by Irish youngster Jack Byrne to leave the comforts of Manchester City and go Dutch.

Current U21 cap Byrne earlier this month agreed a season-long loan move from City to Cambuur, who play in Holland's top flight.

And with so few Irish youngsters making the grade in England's Premier League of late, Keane has welcomed Byrne's "bravery" in heading to Holland, Keane aware that players like David Beckham (Preston) benefited from loan spells.

"He's obviously done his home work and the club has done its home work on where he is going. There can only be benefits and you take your hat off to him," said Keane, who watched Byrne in action for the Irish U21 side against Andorra in March.

"Some players will say when they go on loan 'Ah, it's only down the road' but going over to the Dutch league, I think there can only be benefits so long as he is getting regular games. And I am sure that City have looked into all that so it's great, it's good news.

"I've not enough of him, but I did see him with the U21s. I've heard about him and spoken to one or two people at Manchester City.

"This will be ideal, playing week in, week out. Playing development games are great - don't get me wrong - but it's different type of pressure when you are playing every Saturday-Sunday when you are trying to perform in front of a big crowd," added Keane.
