Irish just edged out by Spain in friendly

The Republic of Ireland Women's National Team lost narrowly to World Cup finalists Spain in an international friendly in Asturias this evening.

Spain opened the scoring in the 47th minute through Jenni Hormoso and Ireland thought they had equalised in the 83rd minute when Louise Quinn headed home from a corner but the referee disallowed the effort.

Ireland: Emma Byrne (Arsenal), Diane Caldwell (Avaldsnes), Louise Quinn (Eskilstuna United), Megan Campbell (Florida State University), Sophie Perry (Millwall); Aine O'Gorman (UCD Waves), Niamh Fahey (Chelsea), Denise O'Sullivan (Glasgow City); Ruesha Littlejohn (Celtic), Fiona O'Sullivan (Notts County), Julie Ann Russell (UCD Waves). Subs: Siobhan Killeen (Raheny United) for F O'Sullivan (46), Carol Breen (Wexford Youths Women's AFC) for Russell (65).

p Republic of Ireland Women's U17 Manager Dave Connell believes his side can cause a major upset in this week's UEFA European Women's U17 Championship Elite Phase in Cork.

The Irish face England tomorrow evening at Turner's Cross (7pm) and then play Netherlands on Saturday and Hungary next Tuesday looking to win the group and book a place to the U17 finals in Iceland this June.

It's five years since Noel King guided the U17s to silver in the European Championships and then to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's U17 World Cup and no team has been back since so Connell, who guided the U19s to the semi-final stage, is hoping the presence of some of last year's U19 squad around the group this week can provide the necessary inspiration. "The younger girls look up to them and they been passing on their experiences," said Connell.
