Irish amateurs get off to the perfect start
The Irish amateurs got their UEFA Regions Cup campaign off to a winning start at Tallaght Stadium last night with a 2-0 victory over Turkish representatives Ankara.
First-half goals from Greg Moorehouse and Darren Dunne (penalty) gave Gerry Smith's side the three points and Group A's top spot on goal difference.
The first goal arrived after 26 cagey minutes as Lar Dunne picked out the near-post run of Moorehouse and the Crumlin United player powered a header by Gokhan Koksal.
Eastern Region doubled their advantage right on the blow of half-time.
Jimmy Carr finally got a run at the Turkish back line and was duly tripped by Faith Eksioglu inside the box. Dunne calmly stroked home from the spot as the Irish cashed in on their dominance.
The visitors were lively after the break and almost forced their way back into the game. Thankfully for the Irish, Darren Dunne's touch on Muhammet Kizilkaya's corner dropped wide of the post. But the Irish closed out the game in comfortable fashion after that.
