Ireland man Murphy is ready for Toon debut
Newcastle United fans will get their first glimpse of Ireland striker Daryl Murphy as manager Rafa Benitez has promised to make changes to his side for their League Cup tie.
Fresh from a 2-0 loss to Wolves in the league last weekend, Newcastle face the Molineux outfit again tonight in the League Cup. Benitez has, until now, been reluctant to change a winning side, as United were on a six-game running win which saw recent signing Murphy unable to get into the side, but the 33-year-old will get a run-out this evening.
"Sometimes you have to give players a run to gain the best from momentum, but sometimes you have to change," Benitez said ahead of that Cup tie. In this case, we will make some changes. I want to keep everyone on their toes and thinking they can help and make a difference."
Benitez is keen to understand why is high-flying side were so poor in that weekend loss to Wolves.
"For us, for the staff, players and fans, we have to realise that every game is tough. We all need to understand what is going on and if we work hard - if we are united, as our name says - we can improve.
"Now is the time to realise it is not just a parade. We have to work hard in every single game. If the players give everything, we have to support them. Then at the end, maybe we can celebrate together."
