I hate United: Despite loathing of rivals Gerrard appeals for calm
STEVEN Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish have tried to ease tensions ahead of today's powder keg fixture with Manchester United but admit that the deep-rooted hatred still exists.
Despite efforts from Gerrard to calm fans ahead of today's FA Cup clash the midfielder admits he was brought up to hate Manchester United and Manchester United fans hate him in return.
"Growing up in Huyton I was taught to loathe Manchester United," he related in his autobiography.
"Everton fans have grown to despise me... but respect me as a player," he once said. "Old Trafford is different. Everyone there hates me because I'm Liverpool."
Kenny Dalglsh feels the atmosphere between the clubs has improved in recent times but only slightly, even in light of the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra racism saga.
"They won't be sending Christmas cards to each other, but they are becoming more respectful," he said
Despite peaceful words from both camps, Dalglish revealed that he had not received any phone-call from the United boss. "He's not phoned me. No," Dalglish said in his pre-match press conference.
Earlier this month Alex Ferguson reacted angrily to suggestions from Dalglish that the clubs work together ahead of the match. "I do not see why there is any need for it," said Ferguson. "I have nothing to say about it."
Ferguson is expected to name Evra in his starting line-up despite fears he may be targeted by home fans while Wayne Rooney faces a fitness test before the 12.45pm kick-off to determine his role in the tie.
