hummels: i promised nothing
Double blow for United as defender denies deal and City chase De Bruyne
LOUIS van Gaal's summer spending plans have hit the buffers with two transfer projects, Matt Hummels and Kevin de Bruyne, now looking unlikely at best.
Manchester United fans were delighted to read just 24 hours ago that Hummels had promised Alex Ferguson that if he ever left Germany, he would move to Old Trafford.
However, the no-nonsense defender has tweeted (see above) a complete denial of the Ferguson story.
"Just to be clear. This alleged 'promise' is simply an invention … and that is saying it nicely," said Hummels yesterday.
Hummels intends to sample football outside Germany at some point but as he said on Monday, that might not be for a couple of years yet.
"Fundamentally I believe that playing abroad is good for the footballing as well as the personal development. If I want to make the step, I would probably have to do it within the next two or three years."
De Bruyne (below), sent packing from Stamford Bridge by Jose Mourinho, has also been tipped strongly as a Van Gaal (inset left) recruit but reports suggest that Manchester City have already opened negotiations with Wolfsburg and are winning the race to sign him.
