Goal Best way to start season
LEON BEST says he's enjoying a fresh start as he kicked off the new Championship season with his first goal for Blackburn Rovers.
The Ireland striker had a nightmare season at Ewood Park last term as he suffered a cruciate injury in a pre-season game and was ruled out for most of the campaign, making just eight appearances at the end of the season following his recovery.
Best began the new season on the bench but came on as a sub to score a late equaliser for Rovers away to Derby County, and the 26-year-old hopes it's a sign of what's to come.
"I've had a long time out of football and I love playing football, so I'm delighted to be back and my goal has made me a little bit happier. It feels like a nice fresh season, a new start and a goal to start it off," said Best, who won the last of his seven senior caps against Brazil in 2010.
"I needed that to just get myself back to where I want to be, and obviously get myself in the team," added Best, aware that he has yet to live up to the fee which Blackburn paid Newcastle for him last year.
"I don't deserve to just start because I was a big signing, I have to prove myself to the players and the manager that I deserve to play. So Saturday has done me no harm.
"I had a few little chances and I was thinking it was never going to happen. I hit the post and the keeper tipped one round off the post but we kept going and I thought we did well.
"I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't win. To say how well Derby did last season shows how well we have started."
