Giant killers look for Senior Cup scalps

A late season chance to snip a few League of Ireland scalps is on offer for a glut of non-league clubs this weekend in the FAI Senior Cup.

Seven LSL clubs are among the dozen amateur outfits in action in the Blue Riband, including newly crowned FAI Junior and Intermediate Cup winners Liffey Wanderers and Crumlin United. LSL fifth tier side Liffey head to the Midlands to take on Athlone Town this evening with the heavy scent of a giant killing floating in the air.

John Young's side has made a habit of upsetting the odds in the last few weeks as they proved in the Aviva Stadium when making a laugh of their 8/1 outsides tag in their victory over Sheriff YC. Still, their recent work load of a game every other day will impact severely on the limbs of Young's amateur stars. Despite the late season toil, Liffey warmed up for this tie with an impressive nine nil win in the league on Thursday night.

Elsewhere, Crumlin United boss Martin Loughran hopes that his three amateur international stars return from a training camp in La Manga refreshed and fit. The trio, James Lee, Davy Meehan and Greg Moorehouse, return ahead Crumlin's trip to Sligo Rovers tomorrow.

Edenderry Town host Derry City in a huge occasion for the Midlands side while Killester United will be quietly confident that they can down Cobh Ramblers this afternoon.
