Cavani on target as PSG stay on top

last night saw a whopping 40 goals in total scored in the eight Champions League group games, with Shakhtar Donetsk leading the way with a 7-0 thumping of BATE Borisov in Belorussia.

Amazingly, Shakhtar were 6-0 up by half-time with Luiz Adriano scoring four of his five goals on the night inside 16 minutes. Alex Teixeira and Douglas got the other goals for the visitors.

However, Paris St Germain, with their meagre 1-0 win over APOEL Nicosia were the big winners on the night as their win prevented Barcelona from claiming top spot in Group F.

Cavani struck in the 87th minute to keep PSG one point ahead of Barcelona, who enjoyed a 3-1 win over Ajax at the Nou Camp.

Neymar and Lionel Messi maintained their lethal partnership with a goal apiece. The Argentine was the provider, slipping the ball through for Neymar to hit the opener with a clinical finish into the corner after seven minutes, the he struck midway through the half to put the hosts in control.

Andres Iniesta threaded the ball through to the Argentine and his shot from the centre of the penalty area squirmed under keeper Jasper Cillessen.

Messi now has 69 Champions League goals, as does Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo with the duo two off all-time leading scorer Raul.

Anwar El Ghazi pulled back a late goal for Ajax before Sandro Ramirez settled any late jitters.

Elsewhere, Schalke enjoyed a dramatic 4-3 win over Sporting Lisbon, while Porto beat Spanish rivals Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at the Dragao Stadium.
