A bridge too far

ROMAN Abramovich's decision to sack Roberto di Matteo has made him the most hated figure in football - and sparked an unprecedented backlash from Chelsea fans.

Social media reaction to Abramovich (left) was almost universally negative once word of Di Matteo's fate and the manner of his sacking was made public.

Speculation suggests that Abramovich was ready to sack Di Matteo last Saturday after Shane Long carved his defence apart but was persuaded to hold fire until Chelsea's Champions League game against Juventus.

Defeat in Turin was the final straw for Abramovich, who apparently believes that his new man Rafa Benitez can get the best out of sulky star striker Fernando Torres.

Di Matteo dropped the Spanish star for successive games against West Brom and Juventus.

But the appointment of Benitez, who was a hate figure at Stamford Bridge throughout his time as Anfield boss, was a step too far for many fans.

However, most supporters believe it is merely a temporary move until Pep Guardiola arrives from New York.
