Shanpalla's in national frame

Latest recruit part of McManus' team in Limerick

Leading owner JP McManus will launch a four-pronged attack on Sunday's Ladbrokes Munster National at Limerick after recently acquiring the Charles Byrnes-trained Shanpallas.

Shanpallas was last seen when heavily backed and finishing third in the Kerry National at Listowel last month and he is one of a quartet due to run in the green and gold colours of McManus with Tom Horn, Wise Old Owl and Please Talk also in the 16-strong field.

The ground at Limerick is described as good all over and Sunday's card also signals the return of Dessie Hughes' Grade One winner Guitar Pete in the opening Dunraven Arms Hotel Hurdle for four-year-olds only.

Guitar Pete was third behind Gordon Elliott's Tiger Roll in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham before going on to win the Grade One juvenile hurdle at Aintree the following month, with Tiger Roll a notable absentee from Limerick's declarations today.

JP McManus will not be represented by Galway Hurdle winner Thomas Edison in Sunday's Irish Cesarewitch, however, as he was also absent from today's final declarations.

Trainer Tony Martin had been eyeing up a Cesarewitch double with Quick Jack in Newmarket tomorrow but he will instead run just Ted Veale at the Curragh with McManus only relying on Aidan O'Brien's Marchese Marconi in the two-miler worth €60,000 to the winner.

Trainer Gordon Elliott was yesterday ruing his luck as he revealed that Toner D'Oudairies suffered a fatal injury doing a routine canter.

Elliott said on his Facebook page: "Very saddened to say we lost a stable favourite, Toner D'Oudairies, on the gallops at home this morning. He was an absolute gentleman of a horse who gave us some fantastic days."
