Squash: Three out of four for boys from Fintan’s

On a long day of squash, St Fintan’s Sutton won three of the four boys’ titles at the All-Ireland Schools held finals at the Alsaa, Dublin Airport.

There were also solid performances for the girls from Santa Sabina Sutton.

In action were the champions from each of the four provinces. To qualify, St Fintan’s had beaten schools from all over  Leinster, among them Dublin schools St Michael’s, St Conleth’s, Ranelagh MDS, and Mary Queen of Angels in Ballyfermot.

For St Fintan’s, Oisín Dunne, Brian Collins and Frankie O’Dea beat Ulster champions Regent House from Newtownards for the U17 title, while taking the U13 crown were  Alex Smith, Dylan Moran and Jake Craven who beat Scoil Pádraig from Westport. It was a long day for six Connacht schools, who had piled on to their buses at 4am. International players Conor Moran and Sam Buckley, along with Micheal Craven, combined to beat  Methodist College, Belfast for the U15 title.

Methodist got their own back in the U19 age group, where St Fintan’s suffered their only defeat of the day.

In the girls’ competition, Santa Sabina’s U15 trio of Catherine Bolger, Kelly Byrne and Hollie Lavin were delighted to beat Scoil na Mara from Tramore for the title. The U19 team, led by Irish international Stephanie Ryan, lost out to Strathern College Belfast.
