Warren Egan of Coláiste éanna was named as The Herald School Sports Star of the Year at the prestigious awards lunch, which were hosted by RTÉ’s Des Cahill, at the Aviva Stadium last Tuesday afternoon.
The versatile Egan, who is an accomplished Gaelic footballer, playing for the Dublin minors, and athlete, was selected due to his exploits in driving his school to the Leinster and All-Ireland Senior Soccer Cup titles.
“Naturally, it’s great to win an award like this but it’s also great for the school,” said Egan.
The Ballyboden St Enda’s clubman was quick to acknowledge the efforts of éanna team trainer Gareth Hayden, who scooped the Coach of the Year award. “What he has done for the school in terms of soccer is massive,” he added.
St Aidan’s Whitehall picked up the award for School of the Year for the second time in succession. Aidan’s secured the accolade again thanks to their strong showing in numerous disciplines, including Gaelic games, athletics and judo.
Hockey player Sarah Torrans of Loreto on the Green, who is also an accomplished sprinter, earned the Star of the Year award, while Cistercian College Roscrea were acknowledged for winning the Leinster Schools Rugby Senior Cup for the first time as their SCT was chosen as Team of the Year.
